graveney Teams Triumph at Pi Wars Robotic Challenge!

Over the weekend two teams of students from Graveney School Robotics Club competed in Pi Wars - an international robotics competition held in the computing laboratory at Cambridge University. In the past the competition has included teams the UK, USA, China, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Turkey and Nigeria.

Pi Wars is a challenge-based robotics competition in which teams build Raspberry Pi-controlled robots, then compete in various non-destructive challenges to earn points. The competition takes place over a single weekend and at the end of each day, prizes, medals and trophies are awarded to competitors. The theme for 2024 was Disaster Zone! It is all to do with natural and man-made disasters. Read about the competition challenges 

Graveney entered two teams, one consisting of mainly year 7 students: Sam C 7R; Sam H, Veeraj and Liam 7S; Kai and Eli 7P; Ella 7Q and Dexter 8E. Their robot “Reactor” was based on the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant.
The other teams was mainly year 9 students: Shaharazad 8E; Jackson, Aakif and Teddy 9R; Zachariah, Dominic and Arabella 9R. Their robot “TechnoFire” was designed so it looked like it was actually on fire!

The competition was incredibly hectic, with challenges taking place throughout the day. There was hardly any time to fix things went they went wrong but the students rose to the occasion, working together with exceptional teamwork - and they were victorious!   

• TechnoFire achieved First Place Overall with individual wins in 3 challenges.
• Reactor came in a close second, also with individual wins in 3 of the challenges.
• The Graveney teams won 6 out of 9 challenges – what a brilliant result!
