Students mark Graveney for Peace event in style!

Graveney for Peace Day 7th May

Large group of students gathered on lawns for Graveney for Peace Day

Graveney for Peace is a wonderful event that brings students together in a carnival spririt but with a serious purpose. Beautiful weather, in the middle of a grey day, added to the festive feel. This is now our fourth year of marking this fundraising event which we have held in response to student concerns about conflict in different parts of the world, often in places which they had connections to. The purposeful build up with assemblies and lessons helped students to have a good, shared understanding of the story of the event. This meant that they really invested in it.

The photos capture the warmth of the atmosphere and how much students engaged with, and enjoyed the day. Once again a huge range of countries were represented and this year -  that was also the case with the generous food donations.

Thanks to everyone for an uplifting day with a grand total of £712.52 raised for Medecins Sans Frontiers. There was added poignancy as the day was followed by the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Slides were shared with students to emphasise that as we celebrated Graveney for Peace we recognised the contribution that our forebears made to peace in 1945 that we express our hopes for peace in a complex world and we remember that we all have our own role to play, however small.
As the MSF rep said “It was really great to see how many young people have awareness of what is happening in the world and want to do something about it.”
